Miss Representation

Honestly, the society nowadays encourage individuality and being proud of who you are. However, when it actually comes down to what really matters, everyone has their own insecurities and often times for girls it's always about appearances. I agree with the video because if it wasn't for the social media with their models and beautiful actresses in movies, magazines, commercials, etc, few girls would be self-conscious about their weight. Before little kids were exposed to such false stereotypes, they only cared about crayons, snacks, nap time, and recess time. What happened to those innocent leisure time of spending time with your friends purely because you liked spending time with them? Now, if you dressed really "ugly" or if you don't dress up to a standard set by the society, people would be less likely to want to talk to you or befriend you.
The standard is even more visible in the world of politics because as the video shows, only 17% of the Congress. A new fact that I recently learned is that instead of political issues and stance influencing the public opinion, the public opinion influences the stance of political issues. If the public opinion is of perfectly proportioned bodies with beautiful face and luscious hair, imagine how the political world would have any difference on women politicians? As a guest speaker was saying, "imagine if Americans knew that places like Cuba, China, Iraq, and Afghanistan has more women in government than the United States of America, then we'd get some people upset." If people knew that one of the largest and influential country in the world had less than equal representation of both genders, how is America going to become a better country both moral and economic wise. One of my favorite quote from the video would be "no wonder we (Americans) are in such trouble in this country."
